Training run #13

Saturday 18 April, 9.45am.

First Week 4 run, 5 mins run, 2 mins walk, supposed to be 4 reps. Needed to use the 5k lap of RV as when I reached the turn/car park between the lakes it was 19 mins so I knew I’d reach the 4k finish before the end of the 4th rep.

Found it OK, but testing. Didn’t worry too much about going up to 159ish on the HRM at times, just tried to jog slow and steady and enjoy the music. Peak HR 162, average 147. Hopefully the HR will drop over the next few runs.

Very pleased with the overall time, 32 mins dead for 5k. (4 full reps = 28 mins, then a 4 min run to the end of the 5k) Really wasn’t pushing for a fast time, just trying to keep going and get used to the extra run length.

Weather bright, breezy. Wore my orange coat as it was a chill breeze, but worked up a sweat by the end.

A very enjoyable run. Good to step up to the next level without struggling.

Weigh in Thurs 16 April

13 st 6lb, 85.5 kg

Lost 1lb this week.

Happy with 1lb as it’s been more important to keep my energy up to beat off the cold and stay fit for the gall bladder op.

Had a beer at Skegness Monday and 2 cans of Fosters tonight, so maybe that added to my calorie intake 🙂

At the pre-op yesterday my weight fully clothed was 85.5kg; maybe our home scales are not as accurate, or maybe my body weight fluctuates through the day.

Wednesday 15 April, 6.37pm

Week 3 pattern, 4k lap of RV.

Switched off the audible alarm for HRM, and just watched it to see HR. Managed to keep it at 149 or less – better than previous run.

Also, managing to do a consistent 26.5 minutes for the 4k lap on the Wk3 pattern.

Weather sunny but with a strong cool breeze. OK in a football shirt, just.

Felt tired and some reps were not easy, just easy jogging to keep moving, but HR and overall time were good.

Training run #11

Monday 13 April (Easter Monday), 6.48pm.

Week 3 pattern, felt tired as I’d literally just driven to/from Skegness and went straight out on a run before dark. (A pint of Carling in Skeggy probably didn’t help my fitness at all)

Found the beeping from the HRM a bit distracting, and probably tried too hard to manage breathing and keep HR under the 145 limit I’d set. Often it stubbornly stayed at 146 or 148 and nothing would bring it down.

Downloaded data easily afterwards and have reset the watch HR limits to 131 low, 149 high, to match the default rates on the Garmin software.

Weather was bright, slight breeze, turning cool after a nice day, but I soon got a sweat on.

Thought I’d struggled round the 4k lap, but the overall time was slightly faster than with Jeff on Saturday – 26.29 today against 26.36 Saturday. So it was 6 reps and a jog to the finish.

Felt better afterwards, like I’d had a reasonable workout, so it was worth the effort.

Saturday 11 April, 17.00

Week 3 pattern; run 3 mins, walk 1 min, aim for 6 reps.

Ran with Jeff, managed 6 reps and a jog to the finish of the 4k lap. Total 26.36.

First time with Garmin HRM. Set up was easy and downloaded to laptop > Garmin Connect OK.

Too much chat to concentrate on my breathing but the week 3 pattern was fine. Another great training run with Jeff.

Weather was sunny and mild, slight breeze but OK to run in just a shirt.

Training run #9

Good Friday, 10 April, 07.30.

Weather very nice; sunny, mild, hardly any wind. Decided to run early morning as heavy rain is forecast from 9.00 for the rest of the day. Felt OK and had an energy gel (tropical flavour) on the walk down to RV.

Week 2 pattern; did 8 full reps and a sprint to the finish. Total time 25.10, a PB for 4k lap at RV.

On the 6th and 8th reps felt very strong and was positively bouncing along, lifting my knees and making progress – but not sprinting. (Just better than a slow jog/shuffle along.) I realised half way round that I was doing well, as each rep seemed to be taking me a bit further round than before, based on landmarks I’m getting used to.

It occurred to me afterwards that I’ll probably not beat 25.10 for a while as when I start with a HRM (should arrive soon) then I’ll limit my speeds a bit to manage HR. Might affect lap times unless I do a speed lap deliberately now and then.

Not sure about the gels – they have an odd consistency and lack flavour, but both times I’ve had one I’ve done a PB. Might be all in the mind…?

A very Good Friday indeed. Felt good all round and afterwards, and will switch to Week 3 pattern next run. But when I got in I realised I’d not prepared an electrolyte drink….so just had plain water and a nice bath.

Lost 2lb this week

Steady progress. Thought a BK Whopper meal @ Cambridge followed by steak & chips @ Newmarket might affect weight, but guess I’ve been busy enough to burn it off. And I’ve deliberately avoided going hungry so I have enough energy to fight off the cold, and that’s been successful.
