Mild, sunny and breezy.  Waited for showers to blow through and enjoyed nice weather.  Aimed to do 29km on Harthill route.   Had 2 ITB straps on, 750ml cordial and used 3 gels.  Felt slight niggle left knee from 4.5km, and it kept coming and going.  Kept feeling slight stiffness in left hip, which must have been causing the ITB.  Thought it was going to be OK and I’d be able to finish the full 18 miles.  Leaving Wales it started to get more uncomfortable all over left knee.  Entering RV it quickly got much worse and near the cafe and main buildings I decided to stop as it was too painful and didn’t want to cause lots of damage.  Managed to walk off the pain but couldn’t get jogging without it returning.  Walked halfway round RV and home.  Right ITB was fine throughout.  Was very pleased with pace, wasn’t trying to push it, and had plenty of energy left.

Distance:  18.63km
Time:  1:49:20
Avg HR:  162bpm (some error readings and stress from ITB I think)
Avg pace:  5:52 min/km


Up & Running Sheffield were very helpful, recommended Gary Slade at Therasport and I have booked an appointment on Fri 4/3.  Planning on minimal running until then as left knee is stiffening up Sat pm.

Tuesday 22 February, 05:46.

Cold, foggy.  Got up early to do 2 loops to old Westfield but ITB came on in left knee/leg so swapped knee strap to left leg and headed for home.  Really pissed off and depressed.  Hope I can manage the ITB and get through the marathon without breaking down.

Avg pace:  6:10 min/km

Have ordered another knee strap so I can do both legs if it gets really bad 😦

Monday 21 February, 06:05.

The start of the last 4 weeks of marathon training, the last week with longest runs.  Cold, thermometer said 2C but felt lots colder.  Did 5 mile loop: home, postbox, old Westfield, postbox, home.  Felt OK, with the run coming after the longest run on Saturday.  A little stiff in left glutius maximus but nothing serious.

Distance:  8.03km
Time:  48:58
Avg HR:  141bm (little bit lower than usual)
Avg pace:  6:04 min/km

A good run.

Nearly forgot to report a cut big toe (right foot) from a glass dropped in the kitchen on Sunday.  Didn’t stop me running but could have been nasty.

Cool, 2C, slight breeze. Went to Bolton to run 18 miles of the Ironman course with Jeff. It meant running just over 2.5 lengths of a 7 mile route from Horwich to Bolton centre along footpath and cycle track.

Brilliant running with Jeff, we kept pace with each other OK and the 3 hours passed quickly. Carried 800ml of cordial and had 4 gels. Tired towards the end but the long inclines and occasional short hills were good. Feeling quite ready for the Rome Marathon in 4 weeks.

Thursday 17 February, 05:51.

Cold, 5C, wet underfoot.  Went for usual 5 mile loop to old Westfield; postbox, loop, postbox, home.  Did what I thought was slightly slower pace as just getting over tooth extraction/anaesthetic, so surprised at pace just over 6 min/km.  Felt fine, straightforward run.

Distance:  8.06km
Time:  48:42
Avg HR:  143bpm (with some excessivly high beats at the start / bad contact?)
Avg pace:  6:02 min/km

Had a tooth out Monday 14/2.  It had a vertical fracture and half of it was wobbling freely and painfully.  The Dentist said, “Hi, haven’t seen you since September 2006.”  Oooops.

Two needles and some vigorous application of pliers later and my tooth is in the bin.  My mouth and jaw are still very sore and swollen late Tuesday night.  Have decided to cancel the planned 8 mile run due today/tomorrow, and aim to do the 5 miler scheduled for Thursday.  Feeling unusually tired and weak, probably due to the anaesthetic.  Makes sense to skip a run in the circumstances.

The Dentist said he’d like my acquaintance in 3 months or so for a checkup….

Cold, 3C, wet underfoot but not actually raining.  Went for the same postbox + 4 mile loop to old Westfield + postbox route.  Straightforward.

Avg HR:  144bpm (would be lower if an easy downhill stretch hadn’t peaked at 174bpm – prob poor contact with strap)
Avg pace:  5:59 min/km

Saturday 12 February, 05:59.

Felt mild, 8C, drizzle for first hour.  Did the same 25k route as previous weekends.  Started in the dark, making it difficult to dodge puddles round RV and coudn’t be sure what pace I was doing.  Carried 800ml cordial and had 3 gels.  Felt OK, a bit tired towards the end but not as bad as last Saturday.  A good run.

Mild, 9C, very slight drizzle.  Did loop past postbox, out to old Westfield, back round postbox and home.  Straightforward, easy.

Tuesday 8 February, 05:46.

Cold, 2C, frost everywhere.  Did a loop to post box, then off for two 4 mile loops to old Westfield.  On 2nd loop nearly got took out by a lorry that wouldn’t budge an inch.  Felt very good throughout, wasn’t pushing it and carried water in Camelbak.  Could have easily gone much further.  A good run.
