Greater Manchester Marathon 2013

Sunday 30th April, 09:00

Cool and overcast at the start, probably 4C.  Improving to 8-9C and a bit of sunshine at the end, with a couple of light showers inbetween.  Ran this marathon with my brother Jeff, of course.  It was hard to judge what to wear but went with a running vest and lightweight yellow jacket; in hindsight this was probably about right.

Tried to keep to an easy pace for the first part of the race.  Went through halfway feeling fine and seemed in control and doing a reasonable pace at 20 miles.  Lots of great support from the crowds, especially around some road junctions and through Altrincham.  Around 20 miles Jeff had left knee pain that needed a bit of walking, and a few miles of run/walk got us nearer the finish.  Then my energy levels dropped a lot, I started to feel unwell and found it harder to get running again.  We walked some more and ran over the finish line, and still finished just 45 seconds slower than last year’s time.

The worst injury I found afterwards was a bad blister covering lots of my middle toe right foot.  It did not feel that bad at the time (it felt like I had sock inbetween my toes) but it’ll take a little while to heal.  I also got sunburn on head, neck and the back of my knees.  Otherwise just tired, mentally and generally, but no stiff muscles (yet) and I can go up and down stairs OK.

Need to figure out how to avoid the low energy on future marathons.  I’d had porridge for breakfast, and during the run had water, 3 gels, shot bloks, isotonic drinks and a couple of jelly babies; far more than I’d planned for.  It could be a combination of a slightly too fast a pace for the first part of the run, quite strong and gusty wind at times, and the temperature rising.  All my training had been in the coldest winter we’ve had for years.

Another mystery is where one of my nipple tapes went to.  I used physio tape to prevent chafing and one of them ended up attached to my heart rate monitor strap.  The other has completely disappeared, in spite of wearing a jacket over my running vest.

All in all, another fun run with Jeff.  Another big achievement for me.

Cool, 10C, overcast.  Went for another 3.5 mile run today, last run of the taper for Greater Manchester Marathon.  Straightforward run, no niggles, just getting into my stride as the run ended.

This taper seems to have gone well.  I noticed this week I’ve been a little stressed, a bit antsy, and after one incident it took me half a day to figure out it’s the taper.  My driving has been a bit more aggressive and I’ve had a shorter fuse, less patience with people than usual.  I’ve even taken to criticising TV soap characters for nothing in particular.  As I don’t yet feel like superman, hyper-charged up ready for Sunday, I’ll take that as evidence that the taper has worked and I’ll be ready for 26.2 miles.

Cool, 4C, sunny.  Went for an 8 mile run, two laps of RV plus an extra loop of the northern lake.  Felt good, the only niggle around my left glute which has continued after bath and breakfast. Wore long sleeved shirt when a t-shirt would probably have been better as there was not much wind around most of RV.

Mild, 8C, with spots of rain in the gusty wind.  Another 4 mile run. Straightforward and no niggles. Thought I’d be slower with the wind, but just plodded around. Another taper run ticked off.

Mild, 8C, overcast with a cooling breeze from the South.  Another 4 mile run, one lap of RV.  Straightforward apart from a slight niggle right shin that came and went mid-run, but that has also appeared occasionally later the same day. Irritating rather than a pain. Will monitor it.

Sunday 14 April, 07:40

Mild, 13C, overcast.  Went for a 10 mile run (three laps of RV), about half the distance of my longest runs of the last few weekends.  It started out cloudy and gradually the sun came through.  There was a strong headwind on the near side of RV, I really felt I had to push hard running into it.  This is the first run I can recall this year wearing just shorts and t-shirt; no gloves, hat, jacket or tights 🙂  Carried and drank 500ml water and had a gel at the start as I’d not eaten.  Felt a little dehydrated at the end, with the temperature rising a few degrees and full sunshine.  Left glute/hip felt a bit stiff at times.

Cool, 7C, overcast and breezy.  Went for a rare evening run, as I didn’t get back from picking Emma up in Camden until 3:00am and took the day off work.  Planned to just run easy and clock the miles, but as the run went on I felt good and the speed increased.  As well as the time of day, running into a headwind on the near side of Rother Valley seemed odd.  The weather for many weeks has given me a headwind on the far side.  I knew the pace was quite good (for me) but I tried to ease off and be cautious. I need to avoid injury rather than get more PBs, but this run did actually knock 10 seconds off my previous 7 mile best, run #546 on 13 Feb 13.  Felt strong to the end and no niggles.
